Thai Cottage began in an unassuming, but very pleasant location in a strip center on Bellaire Boulevard, in Bellaire, which has now been replicated many times over. These are proficiently operated with adept kitchens and service, very user-friendly and noticeably welcoming Thai restaurants that most Houstonians will find appealing.
Appropriately fresh ingredients and flavorful curries describe a fair amount of the gustatory appeal of Thai Cottage, even if there are fewer curry dishes than at other area Thai restaurants. The still good-sized menu with about eighty items has most of the Thai dishes that are popular in the area. Each is helpfully accompanied by a descriptive sentence or two.
The menu is divided among appetizers, soups, salads, curry dishes, seafood and rice, noodles, grilled items, fried rice, vegetarian dishes, “A La Carte and Rice,” and “Chef’s Specials.” Some of the more intriguing items are under these last two headings with dishes such as the Cheese Roll appetizer (rice wrapper filled with cream cheese and raisins then deep-fried), Sizzling Beef (fresh spinach and slices of beef that has been marinated in peanut and cucumber sauces, served on a sizzling plate), Garlic and Pepper Lover (stir-fried choice of meat with plenty of garlic and a black pepper sauce), Panaeng Curry made with coconut milk and either beef or chicken, Triple Spicy Fish (a deep-fried redfish topped with chili sauce).
Unusual for a local Thai restaurant, the grilled entrees are well suited for the area and, also maybe those in the group not entirely in the mood for Thai. Among these are grilled chicken breast with teriyaki sauce, marinated shrimp and marinated pork chops. To be noted, the level of spicing is generally low here, but can be adjusted as high as needed.
There are nearly twenty lunch specials that include many of the more popular dinner entrees. These are all priced below seven dollars for a fair amount of food. Geared to the customer base, nearly all of these specials feature white meat chicken. Virtually all these lunch specials are served with steamed rice and a choice between fried wontons or a crispy vegetarian roll, and either a cup of the soup of the day, or a small green salad with a peanut dressing or vinaigrette.
